Marinére is a cotton long sleeved t-shirt with horizontal blue amd white stripes. It's history goes back to 27th march 1858 when it was introduced as new uniform for French Navys. Marinére history in fashion starts during the First World War, when Coco Chanel presented it on runway, inspired by local sailors that she saw on her seaside holidays.
In 1960s Yves Saint Laurent presented blue stripes in his colletion after Jean Seberg’s apperance in movie „Breathless”. Jean Paul Gaultier had undeniably the greatest impact in Marinére history - all it forms and styles. The pattern has become a trademark of the brand after Gaultier used it as a major element of his boy toy collection. Then the pattern has been used inter alia: Karl Lagerfeld, Kenzo Takada, Sonia Rykiel, Prada, Dolce Gabbana and so on.

ABOUT JEAN PAUL GAULTIER
Gaultier started his design career as Pierre Cardin’s assistant back in 1970. Just a few years later, in 1976, he released his first solo collection under his name. A decade later, the company made $50 million in sales worldwide. Gaultier became famous through a reinterpretation of various garments, for example, „marinière” - the seamens blue-striped long sleeve shirt. Other well-known types of clothing promoted by Gaultier were mesh tops, which became the most important cloth for a great part of his collections.
