Varying from classical leather low-top shoes to suede boots and colorful sneakers, Dirk Bikkembergs footwear is among the best-quality in the fashion industry. For his first collection in the 80’s he took inspiration from militaristic style and presented a range of men’s shoes, among which we can spot massive ankle boots or classic black low-top shoes made with patent leather. Belgian designer went through military service, having served with Royal Belgian Army in Germany and it became a major source of his inspiration, especially when it comes to creating footwear.
With its masculine imagery, his work is defined by thick layers, raw edges and a sense of domesticated chaos. „I design strong clothes for strong individuals rather than wrapping up pretentious nerds in sophisticated cashmere. Nothing is so boring as a ‚nice and neat’ look. Life is just too good and too short for that”, says Bikkembergs. A crucial point of designer’s indentity and his brand’s DNA is being a part of Antwerp Six. Belgian group of designers popularized the anti-fashion movement and Dirk’s vision could really thrive among other creatives who wanted to send a similar message to the world.
Bikkembergs footwear is all about reworking historical and functional models. From redefining 1930’s football boots to adapting high lacing instead of traditional eyelet system, he’s been a pioneer of innovation. One of his greatest models include low-top leather shoes and suede lace-up boots, both featuring significant long laces that go through the hole in the heel.
